Lanier Scrimmage Game Recap
8/17/2012 – Lambert 24 vs Lanier 7 (Scrimmage)

Lambert took the measure of Lanier in its annual scrimmage game that has become an ersatz season opener on the Georgia high school football landscape. The Forsyth County version of Longhorns bested its Gwinnett brethren Longhorns (August 17) at The Horn by a convincing 24-7 margin. Although Lanier scored first in the contest with a 65 yard scoring strike from quarterback Taylor Grant to wide receiver Jahbril Jones, the game was never in doubt once Lambert got on the board.

Jones’ catch at the Lambert 48 yard line resulted in a sideline scamper to put Lanier out front with a mere 1:03 left to play in the opening period. Lambert then began a drive from its own 35 yard line that netted its first touchdown, a nifty 51 yard run around right end by quarterback Chandler Register with 11:50 showing on the glittering new scoreboard clock in the second quarter. Ryan Karjala, who put kickoffs all night at the goal line or into the end zone scored his first of three PAT’s in the game to knot the score at 7-7.

Following a three and out situation in which Brandon Eastman stopped Taylor short of a first down, Lambert scored again. Register, who replaced starting quarterback Brock Maxwell after only two series of plays, continued his brilliant running with another gain of 8 yards that was called back on a penalty. Now positioned on its own 19 yard line Lambert got a strong 10 yard carry from Reid Gill along the left side for a first down at the 29. Offensive Coordinator Louis Daniel called Gill’s number once more and the senior running back did not disappoint with a skillful 71 yard dash, once again, along the left sideline that reached pay dirt and put the Lambert Longhorns up for good, 14-7.

The two teams reached halftime with the score still reading 14-7 before Lambert virtually put the game on ice at the 6:24 mark of the third canto. Junior Hayden McCloud, the third quarterback to enter the game for the home Longhorns faked an inside handoff to bruising running back James Little. He then kept the ball running right on a 20 yard diagonal march to the end zone flag. A 28 yard field goal by Karjala just 16 seconds inside of the fourth quarter ended the scoring.

Lanier, playing in its first varsity encounter in its short three year history, was dominated on the line of scrimmage by both offensive and defensive Lambert lines. In fact, sophomore Canyon Cook, who played the entire second half at quarterback for Lanier, was constantly found in scramble mode from the pressure applied by Eastman and fellow senior Mitchell Gargosh while junior Jordan Jean Felix and senior Austin Eason cleverly enveloped would-be receivers. The Lanier Longhorns were never able to sustain substantial drives that would have provided them with much needed scoring opportunities.

“It was a typical scrimmage game,” explained Lambert head coach Sid Maxwell. “We played a lot of people and nobody got hurt. We played close to the vest, but yet tried to see where our players were. There were no surprises.” Maxwell began substituting early in the game and was able to utilize his entire roster for valuable minutes of playing time.

After another open week Lambert will be back in action on August 31 with a road date at Etowah, a perennially strong large class program. The Longhorn Nation, which turned out in large numbers for this clash, will be needed en masse to support Lambert as it begins its 2012 title quest.

Share the Win
Lambert Football is proud to introduce “Share the Win” to Forsyth County. Our challenge to our Fellow Forsyth County High Schools is to give back to the communities that support us by highlighting local causes that serve our community. Regardless of what happens on Friday nights, we believe that everyone wins when we take the time to serve others and build a stronger community. We invite our fans to join us in making a difference in Forsyth County.
