The Pinecrest Academy Girls’ Varsity Tennis team’s season came to a close on Monday, April 16, after a loss to Pace Academy in the first round of the 5A tournament at Blackburn Tennis Center. Pinecrest played Pace in the 2011 tournament as well, and Pace placed second in the state tournament for 2011.
The Lady Paladins finished their 2012 season with a winning record of 9-6. The girls played a rigorous schedule against teams like Lambert High School and West Forsyth High School, who both finished at the top of their divisions. Pinecrest placed 5th in the overall Region behind Mt. Pisgah, Wesleyan, Providence, and Pace.
The team loses two seniors after the 2012 season, Irene Garcia and Sarah Rocko. “Irene and Sarah are incredible singles players, and they will be difficult to replace next year. They were key players in the 2010 season when Pinecrest won the GISA Region Tournament and were finalists in the 1A State Tournament in Augusta, Georgia,” commented Girls Varsity Head Coach, Melissa Nevarez. Sarah Rocko has served as team captain for two years. Sarah also advanced to the Individual State Tournament in 2010. Irene Garcia is one of Pinecrest’s most consistent players, according to Coach Nevarez. Irene, who has played varsity tennis her entire high school career went undefeated in the 2010 season. She also plays the longest points on the team, which sometimes last for 15 to 20 shots at a time.
According to Coach Nevarez, the top seven players for the season were: Kristen Rocko (1 Singles) Sarah Rocko (2 singles), Irene Garcia (3 singles), Micah Parr/Erica Papa (1 Doubles) and Julieta Flores/Adriana Dube (2 Doubles). Pinecrest’s alternates were Monica Tran, Dani Bartling and Mimi Drapeau.
